Does Sugar give you Wrinkles?
For those of you with a sweet tooth…watch out!
A new book titled “The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger” by Brooke Alpert and Patricia Farris, explains their theory that one of the lesser-known consequences of eating too much sugar are wrinkles and sagging.
Alpert explains that “It starts attacking your skin,” she said. “All that sugar attaches to those protein molecules, collagen and elastin. And it turns those beautiful, supple skin cells into these firm, rigid things causing sagging, wrinkling, everything we don’t want on our face.”
The book is all about busting the cravings we have for sugar by starting with a 3-day detox, and admits that’s not easy for people. “Studies have shown that the withdrawal from sugar are equal to that of cocaine or other hardcore drugs,” she said, adding that people get, “depressed, the shakes, cranky, they’re not fun to be around.”
Since it’s difficult for some to just quit cold-turkey, she recommends replacing a sweet snack with a fruit plus a piece of protein, which keeps you from getting a sugar reaction from the fruit. While that’s not as exciting, it keeps blood sugar levels more stead. “The more steady you stay, the easier reaching for those healthy options will be.”
The average American consumes up to 31 pounds of sugar a year, and a diet high in sugar can cause diabetes, obesity, and many other health crises.
So maybe cutting down your sugar intake is not only great for your health but also your looks!
