Team Building: Putting together your Beauty “Dream Team”

Our Mazur Group team constantly receives phone calls from many beauty & lifestyle companies who need our help in placing executive and management-level candidates.

Often times, we find that there are similarities in building your team internally or externally with our help.

Based on our experience with top-level management, here’s our TOP 5 TEAM-BUILDING TACTICS, which we hope you can learn from:

1. PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE: Building a great team takes an extraordinary amount of patience and dedicated focus, especially when it comes to finding an external management-level candidate. There are so many important factors to consider outside of their background and skillset, such as whether they would fit into your company environment, their level of commitment and focus, and their expectations for this role. Understand that the right one WILL come along, so just be patient.

2. COMPANY CULTURE: Part of having a dream team is cultivating the right kind of environment that not only attracts the best people, but more importantly retains them and helps them thrive within your company. Take a good look internally and see if your environment is stimulating to your current employees. We find that one of the most common reasons for job searches from our management candidates is that they no longer felt there was a path to future success at their current company. Top-level executives need to see a future for their growth and opportunity and the right company environment to stimulate that growth.

3.  THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX: Have you ever lost something and found it in the place where you last expected to find it? Some of our clients are so focused on finding that right candidate, that they sometimes fail to see that the perfect candidate is standing right in front of them. That’s where we come in to help! We have met so many people in so many different places, and we see strengths in people that some companies may not see.  We are in constant contact with our talent so that when the right opportunity comes along, we can connect them with the right company.  So when you’re looking for a specific candidate, widen your search and let us help you!

4. GET TO KNOW THE “REAL” THEM: Everyone can have a strong background and incredible skill level. What  we look for during our candidate search is their  flexibility, curiosity, and motivation. Are they curious in  new ways of learning? Are they flexible enough to accept and adapt to different challenges? What motivates them outside of work? What do they like to do during their spare time? We prefer to have an engaging conversation with job candidates, rather than to “interview” them.

5. VALUE IN EVERYONE: Our executive recruiting experience has shown that it’s often surprising how valuable certain people are in a different way than they were being utilized. This enlightenment just proves that sometimes talent searches aren’t done in the right places. If you’re looking to fill a VP of Marketing position, does it mean you should only look for VPs of Marketing candidates?  What about an Advertising Director? Or a Creative Director with a business background?  Great talent can be found in places you least expect.
