Interviewer’s Pet Peeves
For most job interviewees, things like not wearing too much makeup and not arriving too early are common sense.
However, as executive recruiters, we’re sometimes surprised at some of the missteps of less-savvy job applicants.
Here’s a list of some of our pet peeves:
1. Not bringing a Pen and Notebook: There’s nothing that screams you’re ill-prepared when you forget to bring a pen and a notepad to takes notes during your interview. It’s always a good sign when job candidates take notes since it shows that you’re engaged and interested in the position. While it’s easier to jot down notes on your phone or tablet, this is one of the few times where traditional pen and paper works best.
2. Loud Jewelry: In addition to “less is always more”, also keep in mind that “quiet is always louder.” While we love job applicants who are fashionable, it’s very distracting when your earrings or bracelets are jangling away when you move and talk. Keep it simple and leave your noisy jewelry at home.
3. Chipped Nails: We understand how manicures are time consuming but job interviews are the one time when you really have to look as polished as possible. If your nails are chipped, either swipe on a new coat or go polish-free.
4. Bulky Bag: You’re going to an interview, not a weekend trip. Leave your gym clothes, extra pair of shoes, and other miscellaneous items at home or your car. Use a professional looking leather bag and only bring interview essentials such as a notepad, pens, folder with resumes, portfolio (if applicable), breath mints, and your makeup bag (always good to freshen up before your interview).
5. Sunglasses/Coat: We tend to forget that we still have sunglasses on top of our heads, so make sure your sunglasses are tucked in your bag. Remove your coat as soon as you enter the building and casually drape it over your arm so that you’re not still wearing it during your interview.
So there it is, folks – good luck!
