Background Checks: What to Expect during your Job Application
In this competitive job market, it’s always good to know what information your recruiter and/or HR department is looking for, since it can help you better prepare for the recruitment process.
StyleCareers.com conducted a recent survey of over 200 fashion industry recruiters on their use of background checks.
Here’s what they found:
- Roughly 83% of all fashion industry recruiters check a job seeker’s personal references before hiring them.
- Just under half of all fashion industry recruiters verify a job seeker’s work history before offering them a job.
- About 18% of all fashion industry recruiters perform credit checks on potential employees.
- Approximately 30% of all fashion industry recruiters verify a job seeker’s education credentials before making an offer.
- Over 50% of all fashion industry recruiters perform a criminal background check before making an offer to a potential employee.
And if you think you’re the only one who “embellishes” their resume, think again. high number of recruiters claim that fashion industry job seekers LIE during the recruitment/hiring process. Check out the chart below:
The most common lie (by a wide margin) concerns compensation. Dates of employment and job titles were the second and third most commonly lied about items.
Our advice to all of you job-seekers?
Be Honest. Whether you’re exaggerating your job responsibilities or embellishing your previous job titles, honesty is still the best policy. Sooner or later, the truth will come out regarding your experience and qualifications and in this competitive job market, it’s just too risky.
