Top Job Search Tips
If you’re ready to make a change from your current position or need to find a new job, start preparing now. A great first step is to compile a target list of companies you would love to work for and start researching them. Get to know them inside and out. Use tools like LinkedIn and Hoovers to research the backgrounds of key management. Find out how you can get connected to them through your own network. Where did they go to school? Where did they previously work? You may find some commonalities with your own background, which could be very valuable.
Next, review the company websites thoroughly to understand their history, products or services, clients, Executive Team, mission, charities, etc. Read through their press releases. Read current and back issues of industry specific magazines and check their online content. You may find some interesting trend articles that could be relevant to your experience or a position you are interviewing for.
Make sure to engage your trusted network. Get in touch with former colleagues, mentors, and supervisors who you may not have spoken with in awhile. Nothing replaces picking up the phone for a personal touch, but you can certainly send out personal emails as well. Also, get connected with these folks on LinkedIn to expand your reach to potential opportunities and resources.
Once you have reconnected with your network and have a good handle on your target companies, let these trusted contacts know who you are targeting and ask them how they can help you you stay ahead of the job posting curve. Often times a company will post a job internally before putting something up on their website or job boards. If you do not have a connection at a company, then frequently review the website and job boards for updated job postings. Speed to apply is definitely a factor in this type of job market.
Finally, engage a trusted Recruiter who can give you the inside track on companies that are hiring and open positions that you may not otherwise have access to. Work together with your Recruiter to formulate a strategy. Setting clear expectations and guidelines is key to a strong partnership.
The possibilities and resources are endless. So take a proactive approach to land that ideal next step in your career.
