If you’re ready to make a change from your current position or need to find a new job, start preparing now. Put together a target list of companies you’d love to work for and start researching them. Get to know them inside and out, and when the time comes, all your hard work will show, and you will shine!
I can’t say this enough…companies are running lean these days, and everyone’s time is compressed. So, it’s vitally important that you go well prepared for your interview. You will instantly show respect for the interviewer’s time by not asking basic questions about the company that you should already know the answers to through your research.
Use tools liked LinkedIn and Hoovers to research the backgrounds of your interviewers and key management. Find out where they went to school and where they worked previously. You may find some commonalities with your own background, which could be valuable.
Review the company website thoroughly to understand their history, products or services, clients, Executive Team, mission, charities, etc. Read through their press releases. Ask your network what they know about the company. Read current and back issues of industry specific magazines, and check their online content. You may find some interesting trend articles that would be relevant to the position you’re interviewing for.
Really the possibilities and resources are endless…well, except for maybe your time. But that’s NO excuse! In today’s job market, you are competing with countless applicants and job seekers. Don’t be a victim – take a proactive approach to land that ideal next step in your career.
If you don’t put in the time necessary to prepare, someone else will.
And that person will get the job, instead of you.
