MAYBEE FOR SURE
Okay, so maybe the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “AMERICAN IDIOT”, based upon the iconic Green Day album of the same name, isn’t exactly what you’d call uplifting. But Master Stylist Kevin Maybee inspires anything but cynicism.
Maybee coiffs the headbanging tresses of the young, multicultural cast multiple times during the show, often with only seconds between scenes. He reports that he goes through almost two cans of PRAVANA SUPER SHAPE SPRAY each week during the grueling production schedule (including two shows on Saturdays, and two shows on Sundays). Along with PRAVANA FINISHING MIST, these multi-tasking products are essentials for Maybee’s quick-change artistry, since they brush out instantly (versus creating a rock-hard helmet) and allow Maybee to quickly reposition hair and create different looks throughout the show.
Maybee’s resume reads like a dreamy “GLEE” wish-list; he’s done hair (oh, and makeup!) for top productions including MOVIN’ OUT, CATS, LES MIZ, PHANTOM, THE KING AND I, BEAUTY AND BEAST, SUNSET BOULEVARD, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, The Los Angeles Opera.
But he’s no Broadway baby. When he named the salon he co-owns with his sister Sherry Horn “HAIR OFF BROADWAY”, he wasn’t kidding. The salon is located in Visalia, CA, far closer to the peaks and pines of Yosemite than the glittering footlights.
Fretting job-seekers may take comfort in knowing that in the 1980s, Maybee was a stylist at a Supercuts in Torrance. He credits a couple of mentors—Lupe Sanchez, his beauty school instructor, and Rick Guyer, wig-master for the LA Opera—for tapping his drive for the big-time.
Meanwhile, check out the show when you’re in New York (at the St.James Theatre). You’ll love Whatshername’s hair.
