BUH-BYE, OPI? STAY TUNED.

We’ve always appreciated the 231 OPI nail polishes for their witty, destination-themed product names alone, especially the brand’s best-selling red, “I’m Not Really A Waitress.” This family-owned business, based in North Hollywood, which also manufactures acrylic nail liquids and powders as well as skin care products for hands and feet, has held its own against the mega-conglomerates since it was founded in 1981 by George Schaeffer, president and chief executive.

But according to The Wall Street Journal online (www.wsj.online, October 27. 2010) and other news sources, OPI Products Inc. is considering selling the company. The number everyone’s throwing around: at least $900 million, with Bain Capital LLC and New York-based perfume maker Coty Inc. among the leading bidders.

The OPI organization has not commented, but even if the homegrown brand is indeed gobbled up by one of the giants, the family legacy will persist, at least for now. In Spring, 2009, Robbie Schaeffer, a licensed nail pro and the son of the founder, opened ROB/B OPI Concept Salon, the brand’s first flagship, not far from the company headquarters.
