NAFE’s 2014 Top 50 Companies for Executive Women: IBM, P&G, General Mills in Top 10

Earlier in the year we posted a survey from ELLE magazine and the Center for American Progress on thoughts about the workplace. The surprising result was that both men AND women thought women weren’t tough enough to lead.

Luckily, there are some  companies that give women the best chance for that corner office.

The National Association for Female Executives (NAFE), a division of Working Mother Media, just released its annual list of the Top 50 companies for executive women.

Of these Top 50 companies:

  • 27% of the board of directors are women compared with 17% across the Fortune 500
  • 10% of CEOs are women versus 4% across the Fortune 500. These companies include DuPont (Ellen Kullman), General Motors (Mary T. Barra), HP (Meg Whitman), IBM (Virginia Rometty), and Starcom MediaVest Group (Laura Desmond).
  • 28% of executive officers are women, compared with 15% across the Fortune 500
  • 25% of executives running divisions worth at least a billion dollars are women
  • 45% of promotions to the manager level and above are given to women
  • IBM and Aetna have been on this list for more than 15 years
  • The U.S. Executive Leadership Committee at Edelman boasts 8 women out of 12 members
  • Among the women thriving at Procter & Gamble are Melanie Healey (Group President of North America), and Deb Henretta (Group President of the Global Beauty Business)

How were these companies selected? To be considered, companies needed a minimum of two women on their boards of directors and at least 1000 employees in the U.S. They were chosen based on female representation at all levels, employees’ access to and usage of programs and policies that promote the advancement of women, and the training and accountability of managers in relation to the number of women who advance in the company.

These 50 companies ensure that women have opportunities to thrive at every career level with the support they need to reach top executive levels. Congrats and keep it up!
