BBR6 Thought Leader Q&A Series: Jack Davies – Collective Wellbeing Founder

Beauty with a purpose…This is the main goal of natural beauty  product brand, Collective Wellbeing. For Beauty Biz Roundtable BBR6 attendees interested in the growing category of natural beauty products, they found the perfect speaker, Jack Davies (Collective Wellbeing’s Founder) who presented his roundtable discussion of  “Product Development: Trends in Natural Cosmetics.”

Jack Davies co-founded and manages Davies Gate and Collective Wellbeing, two indie beauty brands. At the helm of Davies Gate, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by ICMAD, in 2001. He then turned his attention to the natural products market, where, in the earlier 2000s, he identified consumers’ growing interest in more effective natural products. To meet that meet, he founded Collective Wellbeing, a natural beauty brand that markets high quality, performance-based natural personal care products. In 2011, he sold the businesses to Nutraceutical Corp, a publicly traded marketer of vitamins, supplements and beauty care. Davies has a BA in philosophy from Brown University and a JD from USC.

What do [beauty] professionals need to do to continue to connect/attract with today’s beauty consumer?

The beauty industry is a reflection of pop culture and current events. Immerse yourself in it and you will know what the beauty consumer wants.

What kinds of qualities do you look for in an employee/when hiring a candidate/someone to join your team? Passion for the business and thoroughness.

What makes a candidate stand out?

Candidate that have a specific idea for improving our business model stand out. I don’t really look at the merits of the idea, but rather their thought process in forming it. By discussing it with them, I can gauge their level of interest in the business, their knowledge and their creativity.

Any other advice/words of wisdom?

For those in the beginning of their career, it’s important to form you own opinions and speak your mind. Often people adopt the views and opinions of their superiors without thinking them through. Mid- and senior career executives can have the opposite issue: making sure that they listen carefully to new ideas and filter them through their experience.
