EWG: The Beauty Product Police
The Beauty Police does exist!
If you really want to know whether your skin or hair care product is truly “green”, then check out the database created by the EWP (Environmental Working Group).
The EWG is a Washington, D.C-based nonprofit research and advocacy organization that rates the suspected health hazards of cosmetic ingredients and formulas. In 2004, they formed a database called SKIN DEEP to create online safety profiles for cosmetics and personal care products. Basically it’s the world’s largest personal care product safety guide!
Their 2 main goals are:
1. A “hazard score” is given to skin and hair products that ranges from 0 to 10, based on the level of what they deem to be potentially harmful components.
2. Grades the amount of research available on every item from “none” to “robust.”
Skin Deep contains information and online safety assessments for: 70,814 products, 2,920 brands, and 258,024,321 searches since 2004.
Product categories include the following:
- Sun
- Makeup Skin Care
- Hair
- Eye Care
- Nails
- Fragrance
- Babies & Moms
- Oral Care
