Plus-Size Hair Salon opens in the UK – Yay or Nay?

haircutHere’s something you don’t hear everyday…PLUS-SIZE HAIR SALONS. No, we’re not talking about huge, Marge Simpson hair!

In what appears to be a first in the U.K, hairy stylist Bashar Brown, launched a hair salon in his own home specifically for plus-size women after learning overweight clients felt discriminated against in salons full of “slim” women.

Once being overweight himself, Brown understands the insecurities of his clients. His salon has extra-large seats, roomier gowns, and wide-neck basins for washing hair. But it’s not just about the physical discomfort of his clients that Brown wants to help with.

Brown said: ‘I’ve been a hairdresser for years. Increasingly, larger women were telling me how they hate going to the salon because they are filled with slim, glamorous women.  For them, it feels the same as walking into a gym full of ultra-fit people. They feel like everyone is staring at them.  I just thought – ‘this isn’t right!’ and decided to set up a salon where overweight people would feel comfortable.”After only a few months in business, Brown does hope to expand since he already has more than 50 clients.

Brown’s new salon concept brings up the insecurity issues of women (slim and overweight) who find themselves in awkward social settings like hair salons, dept. store makeup counters, and sample sale dressing rooms (ever been to a Barney’s ware
In recognizing the insecurities of overweight women in hair salons, is Bashir Brown just encouraging women to hide in his salon rather than face their fears and stand proud of their bodies?
