1.  Gloria’s Roundtable topic was “How to Market Yourself into your Dream Job.” Gloria, please share 3 key points from your Roundtable presentation/discussion:

Here’s my suggested 5-Point plan:

  1. Know What You Want
  2. Create your own distinctive message
  3. Network
  4. Look the Part
  5. Be Interesting – Strive for Balance

2. Please tell us about your career path/progression. The road to… where you are now? How did you get started?

I tried a few things before I settled on a career path in the beauty industry.  It helped me to understand my strengths and weaknesses and how best to match them to a job.  Even when I’ve had jobs that I liked, I made sure I was always managing my career.  No one can or should control that.  I’ve made it full circle from starting at a small entrepreneurial company, going off and refining my skills are large, well-respected brands and now returning to a small company environment where I can apply all the great skills I learned.  It has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

3. Why did you choose this career? Why the [beauty] industry?

I think I found out early on that I liked being a marketer where you are able to combine some big picture creative thinking with analytics to inspire a customer to purchase.  Why I chose the beauty industry is the value that is placed on creativity and strategic thinking while also feeding my desire to feel passionately about the product I am marketing.

4. What do [beauty] professionals need to do to continue to connect/attract with today’s beauty consumer?

Get out from behind the desk.  Go out and interact with your customers as they shop your brand and your competitors.  Look at what they get excited about and what they’re playing with.  Notice how they pick up the product, try it, smell it, feel it.  Talk to the people that represent your brand.  Find out why they feel passionately about what you do.  What tools can you provide them to help them be more successful?  Be open to all of it.

Also, make sure you are looking for inspiration from places and things outside of work.  I always say, we work in a creative business, if you don’t continue to “feed” yourself creatively – either through hobbies, experiences, etc – you will quickly run out of ideas.
